Rebound Rumble

Rebound RumbleSM, this year's FIRST Robotics Competition game, is, simply put, robots playing basketball. The game is competed between two opposing alliances, each composed of three robotics teams per alliance. For a total of 2 minutes and 15 seconds, each alliance competes to score the most points possible by having their robots shoot balls into the baskets; the higher the basket, the more points scored. Near the end of the game, each alliance has a chance to score a major point surplus if their robot(s) are able to balance on a bridge in the middle of the game field. As with most games, the alliance with the most points at the end wins the match.

Rebound RumbleSM is played on a flat, 27 ft x 54 ft field (pictured above), designed like an iconic basketball court, with thin bridges spanning across the middle of the field. On each end of the field, there are are four baskets arranged in a diamond shape, each sporting an alliance's color. Alliances score points when they make a basket on the opposing team's end of the field. Each match begins with a 15 second "Hybrid Period" in which the robots operate independent of human driver commands, although one robot from each team can be human-driven during this period using the Microsoft Kinect. Any baskets made during the Hybrid Period count as extra points to the scoring alliance's score. After the Hybrid Period is over, the robots are driver-controlled for the remainder of the match as each alliance attempts to maximize their score with as many points as possible, as detailed below:

The match ends with robots attempting to balance on the bridges--Known as the CoopertitionTM bridges--located at the middle of the field for extra points. In Qualification matches, winning alliances accumulate wins to determine their order in the final pairing. In Elimination matches, winning alliances advance on with the hopes of winning the entire competition.
