For New Students

What will I be doing in Rocky Mountain Robotics?
You will get to help build and program a robot to compete in robotics competitions. No, it’s not like Battle Bots! The competitions consist of two alliance teams each having three robots on their team. The two teams compete in challenges that vary from year to year. This year the robots have to pick up inflatable tubes and stack them on a rack to earn points.
How often does Robotics meet?
Full team meetings are held once a week, usually on Wednesday nights. Sub-teams may meet on other nights depending on their respective needs and preferences.
What exactly do you do in the weekly meetings?

There are two basic kinds of meetings, pre-build season meetings, and build season meetings.

A pre-season meeting is shorter and generally goes from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

To start, we usually touch base with announcements and then get straight to competition sub-team meetings. Then, we split into admin sub-teams. Lastly, we finish it off with a team builder activity, which is meant to improve team skills.

A build season meeting is from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Initially the meetings start with a weekly update on our progress, information about how far along we are, and whether we are behind schedule or not. Since it’s build season, the remainder of the meeting is dedicated to competition sub-teams work time. At the very end we get together for a progress report.

Build season is a hectic and crazy time of the robotics year.

As the season ends, it becomes crunch time. Meetings are held later to catch up. Sleep is a rare treat, Robotics members become family, and the meeting place a second home. Even though the work is difficult, the rewards are great. Past members have said they are glad that they participated in Robotics; even though it was a fairly large commitment, they did enjoy it.
